Medical administrative assistant training

The following programs prepare students for careers as medical administrative assistants:

  • Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Medical Administrative Assistant
  • Medical Administrative Assistant Diploma

A student can complete an associate degree in 18 months of full-time study or earn a technical diploma in 12 months. Classes cover topics such as the following:

  • Keyboarding
  • Medical terminology
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Health care law and ethics
  • Medical transcription
  • Office procedures
  • Business writing

Students also take general education classes that strengthen their communication, analytic and presentation skills. They are ready for careers in today’s diverse workplaces.

Careers for graduates

People with training as medical administrative assistants can look forward to positions where they work in some or all of the following areas:

  • Patient appointments
  • Medical records
  • Written and verbal communications
  • Reception and patient check-in
  • Insurance and payment
  • Office management

They may have job titles such as Hospital Admissions Specialist, Medical Records Manager or Admitting and Discharge Clerk.
